Supporting AI Adoption Among Community-Based Organizations: The AI Opportunity Accelerator (AIOA)

AI is evolving incredibly fast, and to prevent new forms of digital inequity as the technology advances, capacity-building efforts that target community-based organizations are essential. Project Evident’s AI Opportunity Accelerator (AIOA) — delivered in partnership with community foundations in Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Columbia, SC; and San Francisco, CA — provided grassroots organizations with technical assistance and implementation funding to harness AI for greater productivity and outcomes.

Over the 12-month accelerator, participating organizations had access to individualized coaching, in-person working sessions, webinars customized to shared interests, and self-paced learning modules. The result: an AI adoption roadmap tailored to each organization’s priorities and capabilities, helping them define and implement appropriate AI solutions.

At the conclusion of the Accelerator, organizations reported meaningful gains, including:

  • 90% indicated greater efficiency, allowing staff to pursue grants, deepen client relationships, and focus on higher-value work
  • 75% of organizations cited organizational effectiveness improvements in terms of stronger outcomes, output quality, accuracy, and consistency
  • 60%+ of nonprofits surveyed reported building more than one AI solution

To learn more about the support we offered and impact achieved, below is a one-page overview summarizing key outcomes, eight case studies illustrating the sector’s ingenuity, and expert-led webinars to build greater AI awareness and practical skills. Together, we hope that this content helps nonprofit leaders move from AI curiosity to readiness and encourages funders to assist nonprofits navigating AI adoption.
